The Duchess of Sussex is pregnant, Kensington Palace has announced. The Duke and Duchess, who announced the “happy news” ahead of their 16-day tour of Australia, Fiji, Tonga, and New Zealand, are “delighted”, a spokesman said. The Duchess, who is said to be in good health, is due in the spring.
The Queen and other senior royals were told about the pregnancy on Friday when members of the Royal Family gathered in Windsor for Princess Eugenie’s wedding.
Prime Minister Theresa May has also congratulated the couple, saying: “My warmest congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on the happy news they are expecting a baby in the spring. Wishing them all the best.”
Harry and Meghan had not made a secret of their desire to have a child.
She had said, in a 2016 interview, that becoming a mother was on her “bucket list”, while Harry said in their engagement interview: “You know, I think one step at a time, and hopefully we’ll start a family in the near future.”
When and where will the baby be born?
The Duchess of Cambridge had three successful deliveries at the private Lindo Wing in St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, so Meghan might follow her sister-in-law’s lead.
Harry was also born there in 1984. It is close to Kensington Palace and well practiced at dealing with royal births, and the publicity surrounding them.
Where will the baby fall in the line of succession?
Their baby will be seventh in line to the throne.
Their baby will be a first cousin of Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis – but will not be a prince or princess themselves unless the Queen steps in ahead of the birth.
King George V – Harry’s great great grandfather – limited titles within the royal family in 1917. This means Harry and Meghan’s firstborn, as a great-grandchild of the sovereign, is too far down the line of succession to be an HRH.
When is the Duchess of Sussex due?
Meghan – who has had her 12-week scan – is in good health. The baby will be due in Spring 2019. We will have to wait and see if the couple decides to keep the baby elusive as Prince Louis or otherwise. Will the baby takes after its mom’s looks or dad’s? I guess we will just have to wait.
Heartiest congratulations to the beautiful couple!
