My Photo Stream is Apple’s first attempt at a cloud-based photo solution. Even though iCloud has taken over now, it still remains in Apple’s device. It’s pretty easy to use; whenever you capture an image via an iPhone, it saves the image into two separate albums called Camera Roll and My Photo Stream. The former lets you store the images to your device, while the latter i.e., It stores them in the cloud and syncs with all your other devices. However, my Photo Stream has a limitation of keeping only the most recent photos that were taken within the last 30 days up to a maximum of 1000 photos.
Unlike iCloud Photo Library, it also doesn’t take up any of your precious iCloud storage space, giving you more room for backups and app data.
However, you will have to enable My Photo Stream manually.
Let’s learn how to use My Photo Stream on iPhone:
(We should let you know that if you have iCloud Photo library enabled, all new photos will appear in the All Photos area, instead of a separate My Photo Streams album)
How to enable My Photo Stream:
1. Launch Settings and then tap on Photos
2. Next, tap My Photos Stream
This is now enabled!
Here’s how you can access My Photo Stream:
Open the Photos app, and tap Albums. You will see an album of My Photo Stream, with photos of the last 30 days stored.
Is My Photo Stream better than iCloud Photo Library?
Well, this entirely depends on your choice of preference. If you’re a subscriber to one of Apple’s lower storage tiers, then My Photo Stream is the better option for you, since iCloud’s photo library will give you a limited storage that might not be enough for your photos. And you also get the benefit of accessing your photos on any Apple device if you have My Photos Stream enabled. So you won’t have to manually copy your photo from one device to another.
However, iCloud offers its own amazing features. Firstly, it doesn’t have a limit of 1000 photos, like My Photo Stream. Secondly, iCloud syncs everything, whether it’s a photo or a video so you won’t have to figure out a way to store your videos separately; which is not the case with My Photos Stream since it only stores photos.
With the pros and cons discussed, it comes down to a personal preference and how much you are willing to spend on iCloud storage.
